U.S. Army Evaluates Aventra Defense Systems’ Piranha Autonomous Precision Payload System During Arcane Thunder 26
Multi-domain evaluation includes field demonstrations of autonomous stratospheric ISR, long-range glide, and precision effects delivery under realistic conditions
Fort Irwin, Calif., April 2026 — Aventra Defense Systems announced today that the U.S. Army evaluated multiple configurations of the Piranha autonomous precision payload system during the Arcane Thunder 26 exercise, a testing and evaluation event conducted by the 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF-Europe). The evaluation placed Piranha systems directly into the hands of Soldiers operating under realistic field conditions across ISR, precision effects, and multi-domain mission sets.
Soldiers evaluating the system achieved several operational firsts during the exercise, offering both parties valuable insight into how autonomous stratospheric ISR and precision effects capabilities can be integrated into multi-domain operations. The system was evaluated across multiple payload and communications configurations, validating its adaptability to a range of mission requirements.
During the evaluation, Soldiers assembled and deployed Piranha systems under a variety of vendor high-altitude balloon solutions, demonstrating the system’s platform-agnostic deployment capability. Piranha gliders were released at altitude and autonomously navigated to target locations across significant lateral and vertical distances, validating stratospheric ISR collection and precision effects delivery under realistic field conditions.
“Evaluations like Arcane Thunder are invaluable to us because they put Piranha in the hands of the soldiers who will actually use it,” said Michael Weigand, CEO of Aventra Defense Systems. “What we learn from Soldiers in the field - how operators interact with the system, where they push it, and what they need from it - feeds directly back into our design, production, and training development. That feedback loop is how you build something that actually works when it matters.”
Arcane Thunder 26 ran from April 6 to April 29, 2026, and was designed to assess emerging technologies across all domains in support of multi-domain operations. Piranha was among a number of systems evaluated during the exercise.
